The aim of the paper was to indicate the background and potential premises causing gambling disorder among Polish youth. The meaning of the term and its definition according to ICD-10 and DSM-5 emphasizes that the issue being discussed is focused on “persistent and recurrent problematic gambling behavior leading to clinically significant impairment or distress” (DSM-5 Diagnostic Criteria: Gambling Disorder 312.31). The degree of gambling addiction risk was estimated according to 2011-2013 Public Opinion Research Centre (CBOS) reports. The results show that in there are more than 50 thousand people addicted to gambling in Poland and 200 thousand is at risk of addiction. The risk of developing pathological (or problematic) gambling is highest in the group of players at less than 34 years of age. Among the young people the risk is not high and affects more boys (7.5 per cent) than girls (1.3 per cent), mostly residents of medium-sized and small towns. There has been a decrease in the percentage of playing games of chance in relation to the 2010 CBOS youth survey. This does not mean there is no need of certain preventive measures. Some examples were indicated in the last part of the paper. Much attention was paid to the integrated prevention program "CUDER", whose main feature is the large-format board game. The program has already been successfully carried out in many schools in the province of Malopolska. There are some other tools to support students and teachers in preventive actions and one should not omit the key role of childrens' parents who should notice first signs of and start preventing the development of gambling disorder.
