This course will explore a number of the key themes in the theology of St. Augustine through a careful examination of the text, The Enchiridion on Faith, Hope, and Charity. Topics will include a consideration of Augustine’s understanding of good and evil, faith and good works, grace and human freedom, original sin, the incarnation and mediating role of Christ, the mystery of the Church, predestination and salvation. In addition to the Enchiridion, the course will make use of other key texts from the Augustinian corpus, including The Trinity and The Confessions. An effort will also be made to assess St. Augustine’s theological contribution and to place it within its historical milieu and in the broader context of medieval theology, especially the Dominican tradition of St. Thomas Aquinas. In addition, the students will be invited to make connections with contemporary theological and pastoral questions that touch these themes.
The course will be taught in two separate segments of one-week, in a lecture format with emphasis upon classroom discussion and participation. No knowledge of Latin is necessary, since the English translation of the Augustinian texts will be used.
